2017 in review

1. What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before?

    • Completed two years in the same job
    • Fought for a promotion after receiving constant praise
    • Planned a Hen’s Party that didn’t happen
    • Asked someone on via Twitter

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Last year I wrote: “I did not make resolutions as such for 2017, but a theme that has emerged is that I am much less willing to waste my time on people who don’t make me feel good about myself. I can’t save everyone and it’s time I accepted that.”

I did pretty well at that. My resolutions for this year are to make sure that my promotion goes through, and to get my finances in a better position so I can go to Europe in 2019 (curse that Kini for buying a house in the south of France that I just have to visit).  I would also really really like to have a relationship. I’m in a good head & heartspace now, and I have a lot of offer someone else. I need to pour love onto someone, and hopefully have it poured back on me too. Also! #SayNoToUncomfortableBras2018

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

No, and this breaks my heart in so many ways.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

No.

5. What countries did you visit?

Just Melbourne to see my darling Jo. We ate great food, did a wine tour in the Yarra and I spent a lot of time sunning myself by the pool at my hotel. Perfect mini break.

6. What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?

Someone who will yell from the rooftops that they’re in love with me.

7. What date from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

No especial date.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Once again, staying alive. Doing really well at work. Taking care of the people I care about. Trying to take care of myself too.

9. What was your biggest failure?

There was a girl I went on a couple of dates with who I really liked, but who didn’t want to have a relationship with me. That sucks. But I guess it’s not really my failing, except that I’d like to have not fancied her quite as much as I do.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

I fucked up my back TWICE during sex. Once was just hours on the floor with a lovely lovely girl and the other was a solid half hour of doggy with a sex friend from outta town who resurfaced like five years later. I’m too old for this shit, yo!

11. What was the best thing you bought?

I haven’t been yet, but tickets to Mexico & Seattle (I go in two sleeps, woo!). Also my WIZARD ROBE which made me so happy. And in a seasonal reverse, the crazy hot weather has made me super super grateful to the standing fan I bought just before Xmas.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Random people who did kind things for me, like Chrisana and my neighbour bringing me codeine after the second back fuckup, or Sara & Nick who picked up Sebby’s arthritis shot almost every month and gave it to him (poor wee man). Anna for providing excellent parties & dancing opportunities. Other workmates who listened to me offload after a lot of abuse online. Metiria Turei whose amazing grace and courage and honesty was rewarded with a fuckton of people shitting on her, but who has hopefully pushed New Zealand towards helping its most vulnerable. And I was angry with Jacinda Adern for not standing up for Metiria too, but she also has helped me feel a little more hopeful about the future of this country.

Kini for the sheer fucking ridiculousness that she’s taking me to Mexico!

Along with all the boss-ass women around the world continuing to fight the good fight.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Politics. Rape culture. Right-wing douchebags.

14. Where did most of your money go?

#MexiKins #MexiJo #NachoAverageFiesta #BestGirls2018. And also getting salads delivered so I’d actually eat vegetables.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

The 25th anniversary episode of Shortland Street. Making out with hot girls. This upcoming trip!

16. What song will always remind you of 2017?

All of Melodrama. I think it’s good it didn’t come out in 2016 because Lemonade was angrier and therefore better for breakups. But of course specifically ‘Green Light’ because when you come out of depression, and things look up and get exciting again, it’s like that switch goes on in your head and all of a sudden you are absolutely just on the brink of bursting into dancing all the time.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

I am fatter, happier and poorer.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Dancing and fucking. And swimming in the ocean, specifically off Jane’s #jettyofdreams because that shit is gorgeous.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Being scratched and yelled at by Florence who has become very very very vocal when she wants to be fed. Taking work things personally.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

Karen bought a new apartment so we were there, eight people sitting around a kitchen table for eight hours, with a swim in the middle.

21. Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?

My girl Jo of course.

22. Did you fall in love in 2017?

No but I did meet someone who was worth many feelings.

23. How many one-night stands?

None? Like I said, a guy I slept with back in like, 2012? got in touch again so we hooked up three times when he was visiting Wellington. Basically perfect to have an out of town lover, although I don’t want to put my back out again. And then there was that girl but that was a couple of times so not a one night stand either. Wait, are they the only two people I kissed all year?????????

24. What was your favorite TV program?

The Good Fight, Brooklyn Nine Nine (OH MY HEART!), Bob’s Burgers, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

No but my levels of loathing for white cis straight men’s opinions has grown and grown and grown. OH LOOK, SAME ANSWER AS EVERY YEAR.

26. What was the best book you read?

Riders by Jilly Cooper. I mean, it was TERRIBLE but so good non the less. I got a kindle for my birthday which makes reading trashy books so much easier.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

I loved the Luke Cage soundtrack.

28. What did you want and get?

Happy worklife, good workfriends, a tropical holiday.

29. What did you want and not get?

A proper #BESTGIRLS, a lasting relationship,

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

I don’t watch movies, don’t be ridiculous.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I turned 37.  I organised a big dinner at Big Thumb then Karaoke, and it was amaaaaaaaaaazing, so much fun and I had so much love for all my friends. Then the next day I had a degustation at Noble Rot with my family and that was great except for them serving us champagne when we asked for ‘bubbles’ (I was expecting prosecco), without checking the price was okay

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

A good relationship. I say this a lot, but honestly, I just have so much love to give, and also it would be nice if there was someone to take care of me at times too.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2017?

Colour colour colour

34. What kept you sane?

Whenever I actually had the house to myself and could just watch terrible television in peace & quiet, as well as regular bitch sessions over friday night drinks.  Steph and Jo definitely had to put up with the most complaining from me, thanks lovelies.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Am I becoming basically just asexual? I can’t think of anyone for this answer.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

Feminism as a whole, inequality in New Zealand and rape culture. SAME AS LAST YEAR.

37. Who did you miss?

Sheryl. I think that’s a consequence of realising how one-sided my relationship with Tori was, and thinking back to when things were more balanced.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

I didn’t meet that many new people, sadly. But I hope I will in 2018. I’m gonna get out there a bit more, stop being so much in my comfort zone.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017:

I’m actually pretty great.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

“I’m a little much for everyone”.
